Dr. C. Thomas Holmes, 76, of Athens, died May 7. A Professor Emeritus in the College of Education, he was a proud “Triple Dawg”, holding bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees from the University of Georgia, a place he loved.
Born in Norfolk, VA to SSG Charles and Hildegard Holmes, he attended school in France, Germany, Georgia, and Mississippi, before graduating from Munich American High School in 1966.
Athletic from childhood, he played and coached multiple sports including soccer, football, and wrestling. He was a devoted follower and armchair quarterback of the Georgia Bulldog football team and kept everyone updated on UGA’s commits. He kept a beautiful garden he would enjoy daily, reading and listening to the sounds of nature. He was a world traveler, a Boy Scout leader, a MDCHS school board member, Chairman of the Georgia Accrediting Commission, and a passionate advocate for education at all levels. He served as major professor of many doctoral students and is widely published and cited on his work in Education. He was generous, courageous, strong, and loyal. His service to others was driven by both his love for people and his deep, private faith that quietly guided his life and actions.
Survived by his wife of 54 years, Roselle; children Catherine Holmes Corey (Kevin) and David Steven Holmes (Mykael); grandchildren Charles (“Harbor”), Grayson, Kerith, and Brighton; brother Robert (Kay); sister Tina Swanson (Steve); many cousins; nieces; nephews; and his beloved dogs, Poppy and Pearl.
